I really want to learn how to make lampwork beads any suggestion? I've very interested about learning how to make my own lampwork beads. So i'm hoping that some one who makes their own could please point me in the right direction. I've been thinking about this a lot and I know it involves a lot skill but I am willing to learn. And I was also wondering how much the overall supplies such as the torch, kiln etc costs on average. Thanks everyone.

How do I set up a Minor Bench Burner for lampwork beads? Hi all: I have been using a hothead/MAPP gas set up for a couple of years now. I got a minor bench burner and I am so confused as to how to set it up. The regulators came with instructions, but I don't really understand them. The hose package had instructions, but not very clear ones and no pictures. I need like "how to set up a minor bench burner for dummies" tutorial or something. I can't find anything online. Can anyone help, please??? Thanks

Megan_TheJeweledLizard replied: "Hi, I was on a minor until I recently upgraded to a Minnow.. Here is how I set mine up.. BBQ sized propane tank ---> Propane Regulator ----> Quick Connect device for easy on and off of the hose ----> Red Propane hose ----> To the Minor with the hose clamps clamping the hose onto the torch.. Then I have oxygen concentrators but this would work the same for O2 tank.. Concentrator to the hose to the torch... Or for 02 it would be Tank to the regular to the quick connect to the hose to the torch.. I know it can be kinda overwhelming.. I waited for months to set mine up because I was freaked about the whole thing but you will notice a huge difference in your techniques and abilities with a dual gas torch. I would be happy to help anyway I could.. Check out the link below and you could contact me through that."

Lampwork Beads, Silver trouble? Okay, I've been making lampwork beads, (the glass beads you make by heating the glass up by using a torch) and everytime I put silver dots on the bead, when it dries, it dries with a colored ring around the silver, depending on what base color the bead is. Anyone know how to get this ring off? By the way, the silver is fine silver, not sterling. Thanks.

Alfhild replied: "It could be that the hot silver is reacting with trace elements in the glass to form coloured compounds. If so, removing it would be difficult, due to the colour being integral to the glass at that point."

Why are lampwork beads so expensive? ? Aren't they just glass??? I found a pretty bead, maybe 1/2 inch long, but they wanted $8 for it!! And the rest were similar in price.

thejanith replied: "They are just glass. However, each is handmade and decorated, or at least hand-decorated. The process is pretty tough. It takes a lot of practice to get them right. Also, if you're shopping at a specialty store that mainly sells beads, don't forget they have to pay overhead and all that kind of stuff, too, even on that one lovely little bead. If you are planning to get into beading, I would suggest checking out the Fire Mountain website at and seeing if they have any lampwork beads you like. Save up your money and your beading needs, because they give a pretty good quantity discount. If you order a total of 15-49 units, you get about 25% to 30% off the regular retail price for 1-14 units. If you order 50 units or more, your discount can get up to 50% on many of the normal items. All the prices are listed for each item. It's pretty easy to figure out when you're looking at it."

Where can I buy fibre blanket for annealing beads in the UK? Hi I want to start making lampwork beads, I have started to buy the equipment but I cannot afford an annealing kiln so I want to use a blanket, but none of the webites seem to sell this in the UK. So if anyone has any ideas I would be grateful.

noitall replied: "If understand the question right, do you need to delay cooling ? if so you could try a bath of vermiculite used to use it when hardfacing with an alloy called Stellite to keep it softer for use in manufacture of rolling mill rollers"

sociolingo replied: "Try who have kiln supplies and who have a ceramic fibre cloth which may be what you need. They also have vermiculite which you can plunge beads in to cool. See also who may be able to point you in the right direction."

ukquilter replied: "Are you a member of the Bead Society of Great Britain yet? You might be able to get links to useful sites through them, and also links to other lampworkers."

where can I look for a website that has details to make lampwork bead designs? I am a beginner at lampworking and would like to view other lampworkers bead designs which come along with instructions as to how they make their bead designs.

athena R replied: "you can look up "lamp work beads" and see what comes up or maybe look on eBay under "lamp work beads" contact a seller and ask if they make them or can refer you to someone who does."

susieq replied: "check with Lapidary Journal they have showcased many lampworking artists and have included pages of project designs and instructions for the beginner."
